Gun Bros 2 Splash Art
Gun Bros 2 was a sequel to the incredible Top-Down Twin-Stick shooter, made in Unity by Glu Mobile.

What is Gun Bros 2?[]

Gun Bros 2 is the 2nd installment in the Gun Bros series. While it retains the Top-Down Twin-Stick action of the original, the game boasts an updated artstyle and a whole new modernized coat in Unity. And though it might seem as an improvement at first, the quadrupled development team ended up with an incredibly rushed product thanks to higher management spending too much time counting beans.

Released on the App Store on November 25th of 2012 as version 0.2.0, it began as a 0.1.0 test version in Canada as soon as the September 24th of that year. (For context, the last Gun Bros 1 update came out on November 12th of 2012 yet the game still had 5 more Planets to be added, which is further of Glu Mobile's greed on releasing a Sequel to bank in on the popularity of the IP)

The Android version released on March 6th of 2013 in the Play Store as version 1.0.0, being much more refined. There was also a Mac version released but details on that are unknown.

The game was an utter failure, essentially killing the franchise. Tanking in Downloads with only an estimated 2 Million downloads in total compared to Gun Bros 1 which grossed $600,000 in its first month and achieved an estimate of at least 10 Million Downloads on a single platform alone, it is no surprise that Glu never went on with an idea of Gun Bros 3.

Differences[]

  • The game plays nothing like the original. There are 8 campaigns on 3 Planets with each mission having a set amount of enemies and time limits to beat (often as short as a couple of minutes).
  • There is no New Game+. You beat the campaign and that's it, no Revolutions, no harder enemies, nothing.
  • Real time Multiplayer is only present in the "new" Endless Mode (similar to Bokor). Campaign co-op is no more.
  • Deathmatch is gone, probably to "combat" hackers (typical of Glu)
  • Weapon mods acting as abilities with cooldowns on your Guns. You can select up to 3 and you can only put them on if your Gun's power matches or exceeds the required amount of "Power"
  • Progression is completely and utterly discombobulated. Gone are the RPG-like elements and gain-to-improve aspects. Stats are reduced to Health and Speed, and you can onl get Stat improvements from getting new Armor pieces. Guns are the only part of the original system that you still get the same way, through grinding.
  • Armor and mods can only be acquired from Lootboxes typically found randomly on the battlefield, essentially killing the RPG-like progression of the original by making Stat improvement random.
  • Guns are reduced to simple "Power" stats and pre-set behavior. No Damage values, no RPM shown, they don't even give speed anymore. All weapon types adhere to specific "behaviors" and attributes, such as a set movement speed or fire-rate.
  • Guns now have Barrier Polarities, forcing you to use 2 weapons at all times so you can pierce Red and Blue armored enemies (otherwise they take ages to shatter their Shield). Initially the game had Purple barriers but due to the annoyance of only having a maximum of 2 equippable guns, they were removed. The other reason was that initially, changing the Polarity of a weapon cost a lot of WarBucks. The cost was removed to Free as most often players would keep the polarity as permanent and only apply it once to new weapons.
  • Changed Coins to Xplodium, this removes the Refinery process, thus making it much harder to acquire currency and removing any and all depth to it. Not that you can really use Xplodium for anything as Guns are the only thing you can "get" by yourself now.
  • Enemies have much more health for their experience amount.
  • 3-D gameplay with projectile height auto-aiming (similar to how the original Doom games handled it)
  • Maps are traversed through slopes and launch pads
  • The Honey Badger vehicle which can be occasionally picked up to provide invulnerability, thus giving you breathing space.
  • Harder bosses (T.O.O.L. Captains) have been added, taking about multiple minutes to kill, but they are heavily outscaled later on which makes them pathetic when returning to them (Revolutions, or in other words, New Game+ would have fixed this)
  • "Improved" brotherhood system.

Story[]

"Untold years after the first T.O.O.L. wars, the Tyrannical Oppressors Of Life have returned to finish the job. Only the Freakishly Rugged Advanced Genetics Galactic Enforcement Division (F.R.A.G.G.E.D) agents Percy and Francis Gun stand in their way. Armed with a new array of highly advanced and ridiculously destructive weapons, the Gun Bros are once again defending the galaxy from the T.O.O.L. insurgency. It is a time to innovate and eradicate. The last conflict has left both sides scrambling to rebuild their armories. Old Xplodium mines have been reopened and even decommissioned factories are once again roaring to life as the conflict escalates. It is up to Percy and Francis to stop this threat from reemerging with an even more devastating arsenal of killing machines. The Gun Bros are back and, once again, responsible for defending the galaxy. Luckily, they’ve got access to a host of new gear that will help them defeat T.O.O.L."
